The quotation below is from
"Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum Project"
by Barbara Fowler,
Longview Community College
Lee's Summit, Missouri 64081.
"The following are definitions of Critical Thinking
(Note 3) ACCORDING TO THE PEOPLE WHO WRITE TEXTBOOKS
AND ARTICLES ON THE SUBJECT."
(There are 19 different definitions
of critical thinking there with a link
to a 16 page article which she described
as a "approach to the topic.")
She continues, "WHILE THIS DOES NOT MAKE THEM
AUTOMATICALLY CORRECT, IT DOES INDICATE THAT
THEY HAVE SPENT SOME TIME THINKING ABOUT THE TOPIC.
"THE BEST DEFINITION
FOR CRITICAL THINKING
MAY WELL BE YOUR OWN
"- to help with that task, the best
approach to the topic I found was written
by Peter A. Facione, Dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences, Santa Clara University.
His article..." (Note 4).
Diane Ravitch writes this about the English
Standards, "The document buzzed with fashionable
pedagogical concepts but lacked any concrete
reference to the importance of accurate
language usage...
"Dick Feagler, a columnist for the Cleveland
Plain Dealer, observed that
'English is a second language for members of
the National Council of Teachers of English.
Their primary language is gobbledygook.' " (Note 6).
